Dongara,
along with it's twin town of Port Denison, features quite prominently
in the early colonisation and development of Western Australia. First
surveyed in 1852, Dongara was originally established to service the
needs of the surrounding community of pioneer settlers. There
is a pleasant heritage walk trail of about 1.5 km through the tree-lined
streets and majestic old buildings. Guides can be obtained from the
Dongara - Port Denison Tourist Information
Centre. Three of the old buildings to visit are the Priory Lodge on St. Dominic's Road, the old Police Station, now used as the tourist information centre and Russ Cottage adjacent to the Irwin River Bridge.
