Dongara, along with it's twin town of Port Denison, features quite prominently in the early colonisation and development of Western Australia. First surveyed in 1852, Dongara was originally established to service the needs of the surrounding community of pioneer settlers.Dongara's main street. A few years later, the jetty at Port Denison was built to handle the increase of shipping traffic, moving cargo and produce to and from the area.

There is a pleasant heritage walk trail of about 1.5 km through the tree-lined streets and majestic old buildings. Guides can be obtained from the Dongara - Port Denison Tourist Information Centre. The old mill.
