Monkey
Mia is located 27 km north east of Denham and is internationally
famous as one of the few places in the world where people can actually
interact with wild dolphins. These
fascinating, sociable creatures have been coming to Monkey Mia for
many years and regularly swim to the shore to mingle with visitors.
The
Department of Conservation and Land Management (or CALM) in conjunction
with the Shark Bay Shire sustains this unique experience by careful
supervision and management of dolphin feeding. They
have established a Dolphin Interaction Area in the shallows of
the dolphin beach so the dolphins can swim without being disturbed
by swimmers and boats.
The
surrounding crystal clear waters are also home to turtles, manta
rays and dugong. The area is also well known for its stocks of
pink snapper which are unique to Shark Bay.
